Origin and history

The monument to Joffre, located in Châtillon-sur-Seine, is a work commissioned by the State in 1932 by the sculptor Jean Dampt. Originally conceived as a triptych for the sources of the Marne, only the central part was realized. This monument was deposited in 1935 in memory of Marshal Joffre's command post in the commune on September 5, 1914. He represents the Marshal accompanied by Colonel Gamelin and the goddess Athena, symbolizing military strategy and wisdom.

Jean Dampt, a renowned sculptor, conceived this work as a tribute to the key role of Châtillon-sur-Seine during the First World War. The monument, registered with the Historical Monuments in 2016, is now owned by the municipality. It embodies both a military tribute and a major artistic achievement of the twentieth century, linked to local and national history.

The location of the monument, Place Joffre, reinforces its anchor in the collective memory of the city. Although its geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10), it remains a historical and cultural landmark for residents and visitors. Its registration in 2016 underscores its heritage importance, both for its art and its connection to the history of the First World War.
