Origin and history
The house of the union of miners, located in Montceau-les-Mines en Saône-et-Loire, was built in 1908 thanks to a public subscription. This building, of monumental style, was designed to embody the power of the miners' union, a body dedicated to defending workers' rights. The party room, a central room, is surrounded by meeting spaces, while the stairwell features a bas-relief evoking the daily life of miners: lamps, pickets and helmets interlaced with floral garlands.
The building reflects the social and political importance of trade unions in the early twentieth century, a period marked by industrialisation and labour struggles. Its architecture and decorations celebrate mining work, a major economic activity in the region. The house was listed as a historic monument in 2012, recognizing its heritage and memorial role for the local community.
Today, the building belongs to the municipality of Montceau-les-Mines and retains a strong symbolic value. Its inscription as historical monuments, effective since 8 October 2012, protects the entire structure, including its decorative elements. Although its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, it remains an architectural testimony of the social movements of the industrial era in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
