Calvaire, in front of the gate of the church of Orlhague: inscription by decree of 19 March 1927

Origin and history

The calvary of Argences en Aubrac, dated the 15th century, is a religious monument located in the commune of Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence, in the department of Aveyron. This character calvary, with an angel's head on the pedestal, seems to have served as altar. His pedestal and cross are characteristic of medieval Christian representations, often erected near churches to mark a place of devotion or pilgrimage.

Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 19 March 1927, this calvary is a testimony of the religious art of the late Middle Ages in Rouergue. The region, then marked by strong agricultural and pastoral activity, saw these monuments as gathering points for local communities. Calvary also served as visual and spiritual landmarks in often isolated landscapes, strengthening the link between faith and daily life.

According to available sources, the Calvary is located in front of the gate of the church of Orlhague, on the Place Saint-Étienne in Argences en Aubrac. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an approximate address from GPS coordinates. Owned by the municipality, there remains an accessible heritage element, although details of its current visit or use are not specified in the documents consulted.
