Origin and history
The Chapel Saint-Martial de Luzençon is a Romanesque building located in the hamlet of Luzençon, in the commune of Saint-Georges-de-Luzençon, Aveyron. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it is built at an altitude of more than 550 meters, offering a dominant view of the village located 200 meters below. Its architecture combines original Romanesque elements and Gothic reshuffles, including a later added stone stand.
Archaeological excavations carried out in 1981 in the last span revealed a funeral space, confirming its use as a burial place between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. The nave, vaulted in a broken cradle, is divided into four unequal spans and ends with a three-paned apse. The walls retain traces of red-painted decorations, while discharge arches have been cleared under the stand.
The chapel, probably of castral origin, also served as a place of worship for weddings in the seventeenth century. Its lauze roof is surmounted by a bell tower-wall, typical of regional architecture. Enlisted for historical monuments in 1996, it reflects the architectural and religious evolution of the region, from the Romanesque and Gothic periods to the modern era.
The precise location of the chapel, referenced in the Mérimée base under the code INSEE 12225, corresponds to the hamlet of Luzençon, at the approximate address '5381 A Luzencon'. Its state of conservation and its heritage interest make it a representative example of the religious heritage of Aveyron, linked to the medieval history of the Rouergue.
