Origin and history
The Chapel of the Penitents of Yssingeaux, located in Yssingeaux in the Haute-Loire department, finds its origins in the thirteenth century. Originally built as a chapel of a maladry in front of the city walls, it became in the 14th century the chapel of the local hospital. Its primitive Romanesque architecture was profoundly transformed from the seventeenth century, when the brotherhood of the White Penitents took possession of it.
In the 17th century, the Roman apse was replaced by a five-sided bedside, and the chapel was enlarged to accommodate the activities of the brotherhood. The facade and side chapels, with large bays in the middle, probably date from this period or from the 18th century. These bays were likely used to display miraculous relics or statues, reflecting the spiritual and community role of the place.
In 1818, the original stone campanile was replaced by a neoclassical bell tower, supported by two inner columns. The benches of the Penitents, decorated with symbols like false and cross, date from the seventeenth century and surround the altar in the choir. The chapel, owned by the commune, has been classified as a historic monument since 23 June 1937, reflecting its heritage importance.
Its location, at 21 Avenue de la Marne, on the road leading to Montfaucon-en-Velay, makes it a historic landmark in the urban landscape of Yssingeaux. The lauze cover and the mixed architectural elements (roman, classic and neo-classical) illustrate the stylistic evolutions that the building has undergone over the centuries.
