Chapel of the Blue Penitents: inscription by decree of 11 July 1942

Origin and history

The Chapel of the Blue Penitents is a religious building built in 1771 in the city of Aix-en-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Disused of worship, it was partially listed as historical monuments by order of 11 July 1942. Its architecture and history reflect the role of the brotherhoods of penitents in the spiritual and social life of Provence in the 18th century.

Today, the chapel is no longer used for religious purposes but hosts an institute for American students. This change of vocation illustrates the adaptation of historical heritage to contemporary needs, while preserving its protected status. Its location, at 2 rue du Bon-Pasteur, makes it a landmark in the Aix city centre.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its local importance and its inclusion in the cultural landscape of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. However, details of its precise history, sponsors or architectural transformations remain limited in the documents consulted.
