Origin and history
The chapel of the Commandery in Confolens, classified as a Historical Monument, dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Its western façade features a porch surmounted by a window, with a three-piece portal in broken arch, decorated with mouldings and resting on carved capitals. A ground niche decorates the south side of the gate, while a long broken arch window dominates the whole. The gable, later modified, crowns this careful architectural composition.
Inside, two vaulted spans of square-planed cross-sections structure the space, supplemented by a south side chapel, also covered with d ́ogives. These Gothic elements, such as broken arches and vaults, illustrate medieval constructive techniques. The chapel, now communal property, has been protected since its inscription by decree of 1 December 1969, under the name "Holy Spirit Chapel (ancient)".
The location of the chapel, at 6 Place du Champ de Foire, is documented in the Mérimée base, although the geographical accuracy is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). The monument, open to the visit, is part of the religious heritage of Confolens, town of the Charente department in New Aquitaine. Its history remains closely linked to that of medieval commanderies, places of spirituality and reception for pilgrims or members of military-religious orders.
