Origin and history

The chapel of the Recollets, located in Apt in the Vaucluse, is a religious building built between 1651 and 1664, during the seventeenth century. It illustrates the Conventual architecture of this period, marked by a strong presence of begging orders such as the Recollets, a reformed branch of Franciscans. Its sober style reflects the principles of simplicity advocated by these religious.

During the French Revolution, the chapel was seized as a national good, like many religious buildings. It then moved into the private domain, before being bought by the municipality of Apt in 1990. Despite minor modifications in the 19th century, such as a home's backrest at its bedside, its architectural integrity remains largely preserved.

The chapel was listed as a historic monument on September 17, 2015, recognizing its heritage value. Today it is a communal property that bears witness to the religious and political history of the region, from its foundation to its contemporary protection.
