Chapel (Box E 68): inscription by order of 23 April 1996
Origin and history
The chapel of the Rechésy cemetery is the only vestige of a medieval parish church, first mentioned in 1291. This choir, originally integrated into the original building, was preserved during the destruction of the early church after 1850, because of its delapidated state. Only this part, closed and renovated, was preserved as a chapel in the communal cemetery. Subsequent transformations include the replacement of its medieval dogid vault with a wooden ceiling, probably before the 18th century.
The construction of the new parish church in the mid-19th century marked the end of the cultural use of the old church. The disused medieval choir was isolated and adapted to its present funeral function. Ranked as a historical monument by decree of 23 April 1996, it belongs today to the commune of Réchésy. Its architecture thus reflects both its Gothic origin and subsequent adaptations, reflecting the evolution of local religious and urban practices.
The location of the chapel, at address 1 Route de Courtelevant, corresponds to the historic location of the cemetery, on the outskirts of the village. Although its geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10), the site remains a heritage marker of Franche-Comté. Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its protected element status and historical value, linked to the parish and funeral memory of Rechésy since the Middle Ages.
