Origin and history
The chapel of La Riaye is located at the place called "La Riaye", in the commune of Meneac, in the department of Morbihan. This religious monument, dated from the 16th century, is an ancient castral chapel, i.e. linked to a seigneurial or fortified domain. Its architecture is distinguished in particular by its porch, considered the most remarkable part of the building. This porch, inscribed as historical monuments since December 9, 1929, rests on stone pillars supporting a frame decorated with carved elements.
The structure of the porch presents notable artistic details, such as drawers decorated with griming figures. The sandstones, horizontal pieces supporting the chevrons, are also decorated with a variety of motifs: a shield, a head of death accompanied by two tibias on the north side, and ribbons as well as an inscription on the south side. These decorative elements reflect the stylistic and symbolic influences of the Renaissance period in Brittany, mixing religious motifs and reminders of human mortality.
Although the sources do not specify the identity of the sponsors or artisans who worked on its construction, the chapel of La Riaye illustrates the religious architectural heritage of Breton from the 16th century. Its porch, the only protected element of historical monuments, bears witness to the importance of castral buildings in the territorial and spiritual organization of the region at that time. Chapels of this type often served as places of worship for local lords and surrounding rural communities.
Practical information regarding access or visit to the chapel is not detailed in the available sources. However, its approximate address, 5377 Le Domaine à Ménéac, allows to situate it in a rural setting characteristic of Morbihan. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory", based on available geographic data.
The Insee code of the commune, 56129, confirms its connection to the department of Morbihan (56) and to the Brittany region. The chapel is thus part of a territory marked by a rich historical heritage, where religious monuments and buildings linked to the local aristocracy play a central role in the collective memory.
