Origin and history
The chapel of Saint-Julien-le-Vieux de Puycelsi, dating from the 15th century, is a religious building located in the Tarn region of Occitanie. Although little documented, it has notable architectural and decorative elements, such as a 17th-century coat of arms funeral liter and remains of polychromy on the farms of its structure.
Archaeological surveys revealed a painted decoration covering the north and south sides of the rectangular nave, including a scene of the 16th century Last Datable Judgment. These findings suggest continued use and beautification after its initial construction. The chapel and its sepulchral enclosure were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 17 January 2002.
Owned by Puycelsi, the chapel illustrates the importance of small rural religious buildings in local heritage. Its state of conservation and decorative elements bear witness to the art and funeral practices of the 15th-17th centuries in Albige.
