Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Mondragon is a listed historical monument built in the 4th quarter of the 12th century. This small religious building, in Romanesque style, is distinguished by its unique nave and apse in cul-de-four. It was originally used as a cemeterial chapel, a common role for this type of construction in medieval times. Its sober architecture reflects the characteristics of the Provencal rural churches of this period, marked by functional simplicity and strong religious symbolism.
In the 19th century, the chapel underwent notable changes, including work on its cover and the addition of a sacristy. These changes, although after its original construction, testify to its continued use over the centuries. Inside, a fresco from the beginning of the thirteenth century depicts the Virgin in Majesty, an iconographic theme frequent in Romanesque art. This work, although partially preserved, illustrates the artistic and spiritual importance of the place.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 20 May 1997, the chapel now belongs to the municipality of Mondragon. Its state of conservation and its location (66 Chemin du Sablet) make it a valuable testimony to the medieval religious heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. However, the accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10), which may complicate its exact identification on the ground.
