Façade and Roof (Cd. AC 76): inscription by order of 3 June 1932
Origin and history
The Cardinal House, located in Saint-Renan, Brittany, is a historic monument dating from the 16th century. This civil building illustrates the local Renaissance architecture, with a remarkable facade where two floors in retreat are supported by ground beams. A carved frieze, decorated with various motifs such as heads, cabbages and a salamander, runs between beams on the first floor. This decor reflects artisanal know-how and a marked artistic influence for the time.
The structure of the house has an overflowing semi-circle roof, resting on strong baluster-shaped legs. These architectural elements, combined with a wooden cord decorated with quarter circle consoles, highlight the ingenuity of the construction techniques of the era. The ground floor, later transformed to accommodate a shop, has lost part of its original appearance, but the upper floors retain their historic character.
Ranked a Historic Monument since 1932, the Cardinal House is protected for its facade and roof, reflecting its heritage importance. Its address, 7 Rue de l'Église in Saint-Renan, makes it a central point of interest in this commune of Finistère. The accuracy of its location, assessed as very satisfactory, and available sources such as Monumentum confirm its anchoring in local history.
