Origin and history

The Saint-Christophe Cathedral of Belfort, originally designed as an abbey church, was built between 1727 and 1750 under the direction of engineer Jacques Philippe Mareschal, with entrepreneur Henri Schuller. The foundations, blessed in October 1727, used pink sandstone extracted from Ofemont, 3 km from Belfort. The initial estimate was 146,334 pounds, and the work progressed rapidly despite plan adjustments.

The building, opened to worship in 1750, was not fully completed until 1845 with the addition of the south tower. Ranked a historic monument in 1930, it became a cathedral in 1979 when the diocese of Belfort-Montbéliard was founded. The son of Henri Schuller, involved in his construction, became even the abbot. Major restorations took place between 2016 and 2024, affecting the facade, roof, and heating system.

Architecturally, the cathedral is distinguished by its three-part facade (central porch framed by two towers) and its protected furniture, including sculptures by Antoine Cupillard and paintings by Gustave Dauphin. It houses two historic organs, including that of Jean-Baptiste Waltrin (1752), restored in 2012. The eight bells, melted in 1903 by Ferdinand Farnier, adorn the north and south towers.

Today, the cathedral remains an active place of worship, served by the parish of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. It hosts Sunday Masses, sacraments, and diocesan celebrations. Its artistic heritage and its spiritual role make it an emblematic monument of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
