Origin and history

The chapel of Kerfons-en-Kerfaouës, located in Ploubezre in the Côtes-d Founded by the lords of Coatfrec (or Coëtfrec), it dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its tau-shaped architecture, typical of the region, combines a nave and a flamboyant northern ogival chapel, while the southern chapel, built in 1559, adopts a Renaissance style. Destroyed in the 14th century during the War of the Succession of Brittany, it was rebuilt in the following century.

Inside, the polychrome wooden jube, a flamboyant Gothic masterpiece dated 1485, is one of the centrepieces of the monument. Produced by a morlaisian workshop, it has five arches in broken arches separated by twisted columns and a stand decorated with fifteen panels representing the twelve apostles, Saint Barbe, Saint Mary Magdalene and Christ. A staircase with screws, still preserved, completes this remarkable set. The furniture also includes statues, a high altar and a 17th century altarpiece.

The management of the chapel was entrusted to an annual governor, a post coveted by local notables. Fiacre Le Bihan and Rolland de Trongoff, governors in the 16th century, supervised the construction of the south wing from 1553 onwards, mobilising carriagemen, stone tailors and other craftsmen. Ranked a historic monument by decree of 8 July 1910, the chapel today belongs to the commune of Ploubezre.

Its history reflects the social and religious dynamics of the Trégor, where chapels played a central role in community life. The local lords, like those of Coatfrec, affirmed their power there by pious foundations, while the notables involved in their maintenance, illustrating the importance of these buildings in the territorial and spiritual organization of medieval and modern Brittany.
