Origin and history

The Saint Lawrence Church, located in Palmas d'Aveyron (formerly associated with Cruéjouls in the sources), is a religious building whose origins date back to the 11th century, with major transformations in the 15th century. Originally, it had a four-span Romanesque nave, probably accompanied by a transept and a five-sided circular apse. This first state, characteristic of Romanesque architecture, has undergone structural alterations, notably the partial collapse of its original vault in cradle, of which only two doves remain today.

The renovations at the end of the 15th century profoundly altered the building: the vaults were rebuilt on a cross of diagonal arches, and two side chapels were added to the arms of the transept. A barlong bell tower (rectangular) was also erected above a part of the choir. The Western portal, for its part, was subsequently restored, without the sources specifying the exact period. These changes reflect the evolution of architectural styles from pure novel to late Gothic influences.

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1928, a recognition specifically for its apse. The sources also mention work in modern times, without detailing its nature or dates. Today, the building belongs to the commune and retains traces of its various constructive phases, illustrating almost five centuries of religious and architectural history in Rouergue. The exact location, 33 Place de l'Église Saint-Laurent in Palmas d'Aveyron, confirms its anchoring in the heritage landscape of Aveyron.
