Origin and history

The Saint-Aubin de Tourouvre church is a Catholic building located in the commune of Tourouvre in Perche, in the department of Orne in Normandy. Mainly dating from the second half of the 15th century, it preserves remains of its Romanesque origin, including the southern drop-off wall. The current building was largely rebuilt in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, combining a lambrissed nave, a unique north side and arches of warheads. Its structures testify to a structural change: the nave was originally independently covered.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the bell tower's arrow was overturned by a storm, marking a notable event in its architectural history. The church is home to remarkable stained glass windows, including two dating from the 16th century and others, installed in 1893, commemorating Percheron emigration to Canada in the 17th century. These artistic elements reflect both its medieval heritage and its roots in local history.

Ranked among historical monuments since May 31, 1991, Saint-Aubin Church illustrates the architectural and cultural evolution of the region. Its location in Tourouvre, a rural commune of Orne, makes it a witness to the religious and migratory traditions of Perche. The building, owned by the commune, remains a place of memory and heritage for the inhabitants and descendants of the percheron emigrants.
