Origin and history
The Church of the Carmelites of Puy-en-Velay came into being at the end of the 13th century with the construction of a modest monastery and its church, located outside the city walls. In 1340 the Carmelites settled there, marking the beginning of its religious history. The present building, although based on this medieval structure, underwent major changes, notably in the 19th century, where the collaterals were extended (1840-1845) and the façade entirely rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style (1863-1866), under the direction of architect Antoine Martin. The latter was distinguished by two rooftop-terrace towers surrounding a monumental gate, while the interior vault was renovated in 1867.
In the 20th century, the facade deteriorated rapidly due to the poor quality of the stone used, probably linked to budgetary constraints during its reconstruction. The weather and the absence of coating accelerate its erosion: major cracks, erosion of pinnacles, and partial removal of balustrades for safety reasons. Nets are installed after partial demolitions, and towers lose their upper elements, replaced by roof tiles. The structural problems are aggravated by a lack of drainage, further weakening the building.
The twenty-first century marks a turning point with an ambitious restoration project. In 2015, a municipal survey revealed that 89% of Ponots preferred historical reconstruction that was faithful to original plans, against a contemporary approach. The works, estimated at 1.38 million euros, start in 2019 under the direction of the Companion, using a stone from Turkey for its resemblance to that of the Velay. Despite a delay due to the VOCID-19 pandemic, the renovated facade was unveiled at the end of 2024, giving the church its past glory.
Inside the church, dogive vaulted and marked by Franciscan architecture, preserves five spans and two collaterals ending with pentagonal apsidioles. The lateral chapels, contemporary of the nave, bear witness to its architectural evolution. Ranked a historic monument in 1988, the Church of the Carmelites remains a symbol of the religious and historical heritage of Puy-en-Velay, combining medieval heritage and modern transformations.
