Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of Clussais-la-Pommeraie is a 12th century religious building, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the region. It is characterized by a unique nave, an interlocking stone cover and a bell tower topped by an octagonal dome. Its portal, decorated with three archatures, bears witness to the know-how of the artisans of the time. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 2 September 1907, it now belongs to the commune.
The structure retained original elements, such as its lauze roof, rare for this period. The bell tower, with its porch and dome, illustrates the influence of regional styles, mixing simplicity and elegance. Although its exact location is approximate (precision noted 6/10), the church remains a major historical landmark of the village, linked to medieval community life.
Located in the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine, this church reflects the central role of places of worship in the rural towns of the Middle Ages. At that time, churches served not only as places of prayer, but also as gathering points for collective decisions and local holidays. Their construction, often financed by the community or local lords, marked the village's identity.
