Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Anzy-le-Duc, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a masterpiece of Burgundy Romanesque art. Founded between the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century, it was the prioral church of the Priory of Anzy-le-Duc, himself a result of a Carolingian donation in 876 by the noble Lethbald and his wife Altasie to the Abbey of Saint-Martin in Autun. The monastery, one of the oldest in Brionnais, became a place of pilgrimage thanks to the relics of Hugues de Poitiers, a monk who died in savour of holiness around 930, whose tomb attracted an increasing influx.

The building was built in two distinct countrysides: the bedside and the transept date from about 1080 (second half of the 11th century), while the nave and its collaterals, characterized by an innovative two-storey elevation and five arched spans, were erected around 1110. This architectural party, forerunner in Burgundy, later influenced buildings such as the abbey of Vézelay. The church, originally dedicated to the Trinity-Saint Croix and Sainte-Marie, was placed under the current name of Our Lady of the Assumption. Its octagonal bell tower, decorated with three floors of Lombard arches, is considered one of the most elegant of the Brionnais.

In the 15th century, the church received significant gifts, such as that of Jean Petitjean in 1415, who bequeathed tithes and lands in memory of his family buried in the building. The bell tower, struck by lightning in 1652, was rebuilt thanks to Philippe Bouton, Prior of Anzy. The crypt, recently rediscovered, housed the burial of Hugues de Poitiers until it was desecrated by Huguenots in 1576. In 1808 the church became parishioner, and in 1851, it was classified as a historic monument, recognizing its exceptional heritage value.

The interior architecture is distinguished by its carved capitals (XI century), illustrating biblical or symbolic scenes like Saint Michel fighting the demon or Samson mastering a lion. The choir, vaulted in cul-de-four, and the nave on two levels reflect a harmonious balance between verticality and horizontality, typical of Burgundy Romanesque art. The western facade, despite the revolutionary damage, preserves a 12th century tympanum representing Christ in glory, while the southern portal narrates the Adoration of the Magi and the original Sin.

In 2015, a controversy broke out around a project to replace the stained glass windows with contemporary creations by Gérard Fromanger, finally rejected by the bishop of Autun. The organ, installed in 1991, and a modern mosaic (2008) inspired by a medieval tympanum testify to the cultural vitality of the place. Today, the church remains an active Catholic place of worship, integrated into the parish of Saint-Hugues-en-Brionnais-Bords-de-Loire, and a symbol nine centuries after its construction.
