Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Bouresse came into being in the 12th century, when the early church was built. This Romanesque building initially consisted of a nave accompanied by two collaterals, two transepts and an apse, with a bell tower established on the cross of the transept. The main façade, although reconstructed in the modern era, preserved the original full hanger door, while the southern side façade has a 12th century door decorated with sculptures. These elements demonstrate the artistic and architectural importance of the building as soon as it is built.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone several major changes. The transepts were raised, as were the stair turret leading to the bell tower, and the vestiges of the old gable crawlers remained visible in places. The apse, too, was redesigned in modern times. The inscriptions on the monument indicate significant works: a restoration in the 15th century by the priest Anscharius (mentioned by the inscription "Anscharius Presbiter Refecit Istam Ecclessiam"), then a reconstruction of the facade in 1875, as attested "Hujus Aedis Frons Readificata Est Anno 1875". These changes reflect the evolution of the liturgical and aesthetic needs of the community.
In terms of heritage, Notre-Dame Church is protected by two registration orders under the title of Historic Monuments: the door of the south side façade in 1925, and then the entire building (with the exception of the modern choir and the portal already registered) in 1937. These protections highlight the historical and artistic value of its oldest elements, especially those dating back to the 12th century. Today, the church belongs to the commune of Bouresse and remains an architectural testimony of the transitions between medieval and modern periods in the Poitou.
