Origin and history

The church of Poujol came into being in the 11th century, when a religious community dependent on the abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille settled on the site. This establishment gave rise to the present parish. The building, of Romanesque style, was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, but retained its original Latin cross plan, with a unique nave, a transept and three apses (one central and two laterals). Subsequent transformations respect this fundamental structure, while adding prominent architectural elements such as the dome at the transept cross-section.

The dome, a major characteristic of the church, rests on four arches in the middle of a double-bedded arch and is reinforced by angular veins. A system of tubes allows the transition between the square plane of the base and the octagon of the dome. The nave, covered with a frame, contrasts with the arched transept in cradle and the apsides in cul-de-four. A rare peculiarity lies in the communication between apses via a door in the middle. Outside, the pentagonal bedside features a series of arcades pierced with windows, while a 16th century bell tower crowns the whole.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 15 December 1987, the church of Poujol illustrates the architectural evolution of rural religious buildings in Rouergue. His original Romanesque plan, preserved despite the changes, and his discreet defensive elements (such as the supposed height location) reflect both a spiritual vocation and an adaptation to local constraints. The present communal property perpetuates its anchor in the life of the hamlet of Camboulas, where it remains a historical and identity landmark.
