Origin and history
Saint-Martin d'Escales Church is a Romanesque building built in the 12th century in the village of Escales, located in the north of the Corbières massif, in Occitanie. It embodies the medieval religious architecture of the region, with marked Lombard influences. Its triple apse bedside, adorned with lumbar bands and lesenes, as well as its bell tower pierced with gemine berries, make it a remarkable example of local Romanesque art. The west facade, sober but elegant, is surmounted by a curved bay flanked by small openings, while the rectangular door rests on a solid stone lintel.
Ranked a historic monument on 13 June 1913, the Church of St Martin bears witness to the rich heritage of Aude. Its architecture combines defensive elements, such as bedside bolt holes, and decorative details, such as bell tower modillons or black basalt arches of bays. Inside, the nave and the sides, vaulted ridges, reflect a sober but harmonious structure. The threshold of the west gate, consisting of an ancient marble sarcophagus decorated with strigillas, adds a touch of ancient history to this medieval monument.
The building, built in sandstone, illustrates the techniques of Romanesque construction, with false arches and lumbar stripes serving both decoration and foothills. The coarse-headed crowlets, intersected between the bands, recall the local crafts of the time. Owned by the commune, the Saint Martin church remains an emblematic place of the religious and architectural heritage of the Aude, open to the visit and anchored in the landscape of the Corbières.
