Origin and history
The Church of Saint Martin of Cuncy-lès-Varzy is a religious building built in the early sixteenth century, more precisely during the first quarter of this century. Located in the municipality of Cuncy-lès-Varzy, in the department of Nièvre (code INSEE 58093), it is classified as Historic Monument. Its entry in the inventory of protected monuments dates from 20 October 1971, covering the church with the exception of the bell tower.
The location of the church is considered satisfactory, with a precise address: 2 Le Champ De Saint-Martin, 58210 Cuncy-lès-Varzy. Owned by the commune, it is part of the architectural and religious heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. The available data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without further details on its history or architectural peculiarities.
At the time of its construction, early in the 16th century, parish churches like Saint Martin played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for social and administrative events. Burgundy, a region marked by a transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, saw the development of buildings combining late Gothic styles and first renaissant influences.
