Origin and history
The Saint Martin church of Dommartin-sur-Vraine, classified as a Historic Monument, bears witness to three distinct construction phases. The choir and funeral chapel of Erard de Dommartin date from the beginning of the sixteenth century, illustrating an art of the first Renaissance typical of Lorraine. This place of worship thus retains a remarkable fire (mural tomb), symbol of the seigneurial patronage of the time.
At the beginning of the seventeenth century, a northern chapel was added near the choir, reflecting the stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs of the community. Later, between 1755 and 1757, the single nave and bell tower were rebuilt, modernizing the building while preserving its oldest elements. These successive transformations underline the continuous adaptation of the building to religious practices and artistic tastes.
The funeral chapel, opened on the choir, is distinguished by its Renaissance decoration, rare in Lorraine for this period. It was designed as a space of memory for the Dommartin family, incorporating ornamental motifs characteristic of the early 16th century. The whole (church and northern chapel) was protected by a registration order in 2004, recognizing its heritage value.
Located on Rue de l'Eglise in Dommartin-sur-Vraine (Vosges), this church remains an active place of worship and a testimony of local history. Its location, noted as fair in terms of cartographic accuracy, makes it an accessible monument but unknown to the general public. Communal property now ensures its preservation, although information about its openness to the public remains limited.
