Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin de Liniez, classified as a Historical Monument, has its origins in the 13th century. Its initial plane consisted of a nave divided into three spans by two double arches, arched in ridge and rubble, with columns decorated with carved capitals. The flat bedside, typical of late Romanesque architecture, characterized this first phase of construction. The materials used, such as bellows, reflect the local techniques of the time.
In the 15th century, the building was enlarged with the addition of a chapel to the west and a square bell tower, significantly changing its original plan. These changes were probably in response to population growth or the evolution of liturgical practices. Later, a sacristy and four external foothills were added to strengthen the structure, although their exact date is not specified in the sources.
Between 1857 and 1866, the church was the subject of major works, probably aimed at restoring or modernizing the building. These interventions, common in the 19th century for historical monuments, could include stylistic consolidations or alterations. The inscription of the church in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 8 December 1928 attests to its heritage value, while placing it under legal protection.
Today, the church of Saint Martin remains the property of the municipality of Liniez, in the department of Indre. Its official address, 5612 Place de l'Eglise, and its Insee code (36097) place it precisely in the village. Although the sources do not specify its current status (open to the public, rental, etc.), its historical role as a place of worship and community gathering is undeniable.
