Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin de Sornac, located in the municipality of Sornac en Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a religious building built mainly in the 13th century, although some sources evoke an origin in the 12th century. This monument, which has been included in the inventory of Historical Monuments since 1927, has undergone several modifications over the centuries, reflecting the architectural changes and liturgical needs of the local community.
Throughout its history, the church experienced several phases of enlargement and restoration. Three lateral chapels were added to the church on an indeterminate date, while major works were recorded in 1527, 1744 (date on the sacristy), and 1788. A partial reconstruction campaign, including a nave wall, the structure, and the addition of a stand, took place around 1850, marking an adaptation to the norms and uses of modern times.
The building, owned by the municipality of Sornac, bears witness to the religious and social history of Limousin. Its architecture, though transformed, retains characteristic medieval elements. The location of the church, at 6 Chemin du Foirail, and its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underline its heritage importance in the region.
