Family burial in the 15th century
Origin and history
Sainte-Geneviève de Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence is a Catholic religious building located in the Aveyron department in the Occitan region. The present Gothic-style church was built on the site of an older church, destroyed in the early 19th century. It is oriented north-south and preserves, on its side, the chapel of Thénières, vestige of one of the two naves of the old church.
The old church, dated the year 1007 according to an inscription, was composed of two twin naves separated by round pillars. Remains of this medieval structure are still visible between the presbytery and the chapel of Thénières. The latter, built in the 15th century by the seigneurs of Beaumont de Thénières, served as a burial place for this family. It features a pure ogival style, with richly decorated vaults and a key vault with seigneurial coat of arms.
The chapel of Thénières houses remarkable furniture, including 15th century statues and the Beaumont de Thénières Mausoleum. These elements demonstrate the historical and artistic importance of the site, linked to local history and medieval and modern religious architecture.
