Origin and history
The church of Saint-André de Mesnil-Durand is a Catholic building located in the town of Mesnil-Durand, on the present territory of Livarot-Pays-d'Auge, Normandy. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, it illustrates medieval architectural evolutions through four centuries of works and beautifications. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1926 bears witness to its heritage value recognized by the French authorities.
The precise location of the church, at 911 Route de Saint-Julien (14140), places this monument at the heart of a territory marked by the rural and religious history of Lower Normandy. The department of Calvados, on which Le Mesnil-Durand depends, houses many similar buildings, reflecting the importance of Christianity in the social and cultural organization of the region since the Middle Ages.
The building, owned by the commune, was inscribed by ministerial decree on 19 July 1926, a key date for its preservation. The sources available, including the works of Arcisse de Caumont in the 19th century, underline its architectural and historical interest. Today, the Saint-André church remains a symbol of local heritage, open to the visit and anchored in the landscape of the Pays d'Auge.
