Tour du Sorcières in the garden of the Chambord Hotel : inscription by order of 3 June 1932
Origin and history
The Kesslerturm Tower is a historic monument located in Kaysersberg Vineyard, in the Upper Rhine department, in the Greater East Region. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, it embodies the medieval defensive architecture of the Alsatian region. Its location on Place Henri-Jaeglé makes it a central part of the local heritage.
The tower was listed as historic monuments by order of 3 June 1932, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune, it bears witness to the urban history of Kaysersberg, a city marked by its wine-growing past and medieval heritage. His name, Kesslerturm, probably evokes his role in defending or observing the city.
At the time of its construction, between the 13th and 15th centuries, Alsace was a strategic region, marked by intense trade and territorial conflicts. Towers like this often served as a watchtower or symbol of power for local lords or urban communities. Their presence also reflected the collective organisation around resource protection and management, such as wine, Kaysersberg's major economic activity.
