Origin and history
Dijon's music kiosk is an iconic Art Nouveau building erected in the early twentieth century. Located in the Place du Président-Wilson, it replaces a former wooden kiosk built in 1869. Its octagonal architecture and metallic elements, provided by Guillot Pelletier d'Orléans, make it a remarkable example of local heritage. Ranked a historic monument since 1972, it bears witness to the importance of music in Dijon's public life.
The current booth was designed by the city's chief architect, Paul Desherault, and inaugurated on April 14, 1912 by military music from the 27th Infantry Regiment. This monument reflects the rise of the music kiosks in France at that time, places of gathering and entertainment for the inhabitants. Its Art Nouveau style, marked by curved lines and organic motifs, is part of the artistic movement that marked the beginning of the twentieth century.
Prior to its construction in 1912, a first wooden kiosk had already occupied the seat of President Wilson since 1869. This replacement illustrates the evolution of building materials and techniques, moving from wood to metal, more durable and aesthetically in line with the trends of the time. Today, the Dijon kiosk remains a symbol of the cultural and social life of the city.
