Origin and history
The church of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais is a Catholic building located in the town of Mittois, now part of the municipality of Saint-Pierre-en-Auge, in the department of Calvados. Most of the 13th and 16th centuries, it illustrates the architectural transitions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. His inscription as a Historic Monument, effective since 19 July 1926, underscores his heritage value and his role in local history.
The location of the church, at 43 Impasse Saint-Gervais (Mittois), reflects its anchoring in the historical urban fabric. Owned by the commune, it remains an active place of worship while at the same time testifying to the religious and social practices of medieval and modern times in Normandy. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its protected status and its importance in the regional heritage.
In the 13th and 16th centuries, the building was part of a Norman context marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where parish churches served as spiritual and community centres. These buildings housed not only religious offices, but also public gatherings, strengthening their social role. The architecture of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais church, although partially documented, reflects these multiple functions through its preserved elements.
