Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Stains, located in Seine-Saint-Denis, is a Catholic building dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Built in the second half of the 16th century, it was dedicated on 10 June 1560 by Eustache du Bellay, bishop of Paris. The parish was erected by Pierre de Nemours in 1213. This place of worship, located at the corner of Carnot and Repos streets, is also a stage of the path of Compostela.

The history of the church is marked by reconstructions and embellishments. After the bombings of the 1870 war, its vaults were restored. In 1929, two glass windows were added, made by the Lorin de Chartres workshops under the direction of Charles Lorin. These stained glass windows represent the Adoration of the Magi and the Annunciation. However, the bell tower was shot down in 1950, changing the exterior appearance of the building.

The interior houses a high altar and a retable classified as historical monuments, dating from the second half of the seventeenth century. Closed to the public in 1995 due to the risk of collapse, the church was subjected to archaeological surveys and renovations from 2012. In 2025, the Cardinal's Buildings Association contributed financially to the restoration of the presbytery.

The church is also known for having inspired the artist Maurice Utrillo, who represented him in a painting around 1930. Since 1984, it has been a symbol of the region's religious and cultural heritage.

As a milestone in the path of Compostela crossing Plaine Commune, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption plays a spiritual and historical role for pilgrims and the local community.
