Church of the cemetery (old) , also known as Chapel of the Mount : inscription by decree of 3 November 1925

Origin and history

The cemetery church, also known as the Chapel of the Mount, is a monument located in the commune of Villers-la-Faye, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 12th and 15th centuries, it embodies the medieval religious architecture of the region. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by order of 3 November 1925 bears witness to its heritage value, although its exact location remains approximate according to available sources.

The chapel, owned by the commune, is a vestige of local religious and funeral practices throughout the centuries. Cemetery churches, frequent in the Middle Ages, served both as places of worship and burial for the inhabitants. Their presence reflected the importance of religion in the social and spatial organization of Burgundy villages, where these buildings played a central role in community life.

Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives indicate that the building is sometimes referred to as the "old cemetery church", highlighting its evolution or partial abandonment over time. The accuracy of its location is assessed as poor (note 5/10), and its approximate address is given as 18 Route de Corgoloin. No information is provided on its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
