Origin and history
The church of Saint-Barthélémy, located in Neussargues en Pinatelle (Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a monument whose oldest parts date back to the 12th century. The square choir and adjacent span date from this period, while major additions took place in the 15th century: a span of the nave, two sides, a Gothic gate and an arcade bell tower overlooking the triumphal arch. The screw staircase, allowing access to the bells, is a modern addition.
The building combines Romanesque elements, such as the vaulted nave in a full hanger and the geometric capitals of the triumphal arch, with late Gothic features, including the 15th century gate. The bell tower, although ending with a horizontal line, retains a pinion evoking the Romanesque style. These features illustrate architectural developments over centuries.
Ranked a historical monument in 1925, the church reflects the religious and artistic history of the Cantal. Its location in Chalinargues (although the administrative address mentions Neussargues en Pinatelle) highlights its anchoring in the high-auvergnat heritage. Sources, such as Mérimée and Wikipedia, confirm its heritage significance, while noting geographical impreciseness in databases.
