Origin and history
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Louverné is a Catholic building located in the department of Mayenne, Pays de la Loire. Built on the edge of the 901 departmental road, it has dominated the town of Louverné since the 19th century. Its architecture, marked by a Latin cross, reflects the local religious traditions of the time.
Construction began in 1869, but the building was quickly marked by an incident: the façade tower collapsed in 1871, shortly after its completion. Despite this unforeseen event, the church was consecrated on June 16, 1872. The tower was rebuilt and crowned in 1890 by a slender arrow, giving it its present appearance.
Inside, the choir is surrounded by absidial chapels, while the white stone altars, carved by the workshops Cosnard (Le Mans) and Masseron (Angers), feature biblical bas-reliefs. These artistic elements illustrate scenes such as the Jardin des Oliviers or the Leak in Egypt, reflecting the know-how of regional artisans.
The church is part of the religious heritage of Mayenne, reflecting the importance of Catholicism in 19th century community life. Its history, marked by architectural challenges, makes it a symbol of resilience for the local population.
