Origin and history

Saint John Baptist Church in Boutervilliers is a Catholic religious building dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Located in the Essonne department in the Île-de-France region, it is a central part of the local heritage. Its architecture and history remain partially unknown, but its role in parish life is attested.

The building is difficult to date precisely. A hypothesis suggests that it could be the ancient castral chapel of a castle that is now extinct. This type of monument, often linked to a seigneury or medieval fortress, reflects the importance of places of worship in the social and religious organization of rural communities.

Like many churches in this region, it probably served as a gathering place for the inhabitants, marking the important stages of collective life (baptisms, marriages, religious holidays). In Île-de-France, parish churches played a key role in the structuring of villages, often built close to local power centres, such as castles or manor houses.

Today, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church remains a testimony to the architectural and religious heritage of the Essonne. Its inclusion in databases such as Mérimée or religious heritage observatories underscores its historical interest, even if the available sources do not allow its history to be traced exhaustively.
