Origin and history
The Saint-Jean-XXIII church is a Catholic church located in the Val-de-Marne department of Chennevières-sur-Marne. It owes its name to the Bois-l'Abbé district, a large HLM complex that extends over the communes of Chennevières-sur-Marne and Champigny-sur-Marne. This place of worship was built in the 1970s, reflecting the urbanization and religious needs of the new residential districts of the Paris region.
The recent history of the church is marked by two significant events: the blessing of its altar and bell in 2010, and the celebration of its jubilee in 2021. These dates illustrate his active role in local community and religious life. The church remains a symbol of the architectural and social modernization of the Parisian suburbs after the Thirty Glories.
Although little detailed information is available on its architecture or stylistic peculiarities, the church of Saint John XXIII embodies the adaptation of religious heritage to the urban transformations of the twentieth century. Its location in an HLM neighbourhood also highlights its roots in a social context marked by the mix and challenges of living in the suburbs.
