Origin and history

The church of Saint-Joseph de Marseille, located 126 rue Paradis in the 6th arrondissement, was built in the 19th century to respond to urban expansion. Authorized in 1831 by Bishop Charles-Fortuné de Mazenod, its construction began in 1833 according to the plans of architect Pascal Coste, in a basilica style inspired by Saint-Lazare. The financial difficulties delayed its completion, requiring the intervention of the municipality in 1853 for an amount of 240,000 francs. The church was consecrated in 1855, but its interior decoration and façade were not completed until 1864, under the direction of Joseph Ferrie.

The interior paintings, made by Orsini in 1859, and the frescoes of the side chapels, completed only in 1925, enrich his decor. The polychrome marble master altar (1897), by Jules Cantini, and the red marble baldaquin of Numidie dominate the choir. The organ, built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1868, has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1981. The building, which was fully classified in 1999, suffered major structural disruptions (collapses, structural shifts) resulting in its closure in 2016, before a partial reopening in 2023 after consolidation work.

The church also houses a choir organ (1896) by François Mader, now unusable, and side chapels dedicated to various saints, decorated with frescoes by Charles Varade and Jean Sari. Its exceptional acoustics make it a place of concerts, despite the ongoing restoration challenges. The Association des Amis de Saint-Joseph actively participates in the search for funds to save this emblematic Marseille heritage, witness to the religious and architectural history of the city.
