Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges de Collioure stands on the reefs closing the port pass in the Pyrénées-Orientales (Occitanie). Its construction between 1684 and 1691 reused as a bell tower the ancient 13th century fan tower, a medieval lighthouse disused after the reorganisation of the port by Vauban. The latter, preferring to develop Port-Vendres, authorized in 1673 the destruction of the medieval parish church located on the heights to build the glacis of the castle, offering as compensation the land near the lighthouse.

The first stone was blessed in 1684 by the abbot of Saint-Amand, but the works did not begin until 1687 under the direction of architect Pierre Aloau and mason Étienne Ramona. The building, inspired by the southern Gothic churches, was completed in 1691 with a single nave and side chapels. The bell tower, a converted former lighthouse, was capped with a Tuscan dome in 1809. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1923, the church houses an artistic treasure including baroque altarpieces, statues and reliquaries of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The altarpiece of Joseph Sunyer (1698-1702) illustrates the Assumption of the Virgin in a monumental triptych. Sunyer, trained at Perpignan, also sculpted the altarpiece of the Blessed Sacrament (1700) and that of Christ (1708), while Louis Baixas realized those of Saint Vincent (1714) and Saint Eloi (1716). The side chapels, dedicated to local saints such as Vincent de Collioure, preserve altarpieces richly decorated with statues and biblical scenes, reflecting Catalan devotion.

The church incorporates unusual civilian elements, such as 18th century fortification-shaped public latrines, built in 1725. Its bell tower, surrounded by the sea on three sides, symbolizes the link between faith and the maritime history of Collioure. The successive restorations preserved its liturgical furniture, including a Louis XIII furniture, 15th century paintings and a 16th century reliquary, bearing witness to seven centuries of religious and port history.

The church's treasure includes goldsmith's works, such as the reliquary of the True Cross, as well as busts of local saints (Vincent, Maxime, Liberate) brought back from Rome in 1700. The murals of the Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes chapel (1875) and the retables of the 17th and 18th centuries illustrate the artistic and devotional evolution of the region, between Tuscan influences and Catalan tradition.
