Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-Saint-Louis de Couëtron-au-Perche found its origins in the 12th century, when it served as a chapel to a Templar Commandery. Built into an architectural complex forming a courtyard, it was one of the sides of this medieval complex. Its initial plan, marked by a prolonged nave of a semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four, reflects the Romanesque influence of this period. The Templars, military and religious, established a lasting presence there, although the sources did not specify the exact duration of their occupation.
In the 15th century, the church was enriched with a monumental porch flanked by two brick towers, characteristic of late Gothic architecture. This change reflects a desire to beautify or adapt to the liturgical needs of the time. The building, now classified as a Historical Monument since 1954, thus preserves various stylistic elements, mixing primitive novels and Gothic additions. Its listing in the heritage inventory highlights its historical and architectural importance in the Loir-et-Cher.
The location of the church, originally associated with the municipality of Arville (code Insee 41248), is now specified in Couëtron-au-Perche, in the department of Loir-et-Cher. The cartographic accuracy, noted as "satisfactory" (level 7/10), confirms its anchoring in this rural territory. A communal property, the building remains a testimony of the religious and military dynamics of the Middle Ages, linked to the order of the Temple and then to the local parish evolution.
