Origin and history
The church of Saint-Blaise de Valff, located in the Lower Rhine in the Grand East region, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 10th century. Originally dedicated to St Peter, it was placed under the name of St Blaise from 1306 onwards. Built inside a potentially fortified cemetery, it was first mentioned in 962. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements, such as the partially preserved tower with 12th century sculptures, and 18th century Baroque additions, including the nave and choir rebuilt around 1740.
The tower, partially Romanesque, preserves a triplet bay murated on the second floor, testifying to its medieval heritage. The stucs rococo, added during the 18th century works, enrich its interior decor. The church has been included in the inventory of historic monuments since March 26, 1986, recognizing its heritage value. Today it is owned by the municipality of Valff and remains a notable example of Alsatian architectural evolution, combining Romanesque and Baroque influences.
Local studies, such as those of François Burger on the organ (1984) or Marcel Krieg on the fortified tower (2002), highlight its historical and architectural importance. The building, located on Rue du Château, embodies the religious and defensive heritage of the region, reflecting the social and cultural transformations of Alsace throughout the centuries.
