Origin and history

The church of Saint-Crépin-Saint-Crépinien, located in Bréançon, Île-de-France, is a religious building whose construction takes place mainly between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It begins with the square choir and the cross of the transept, the base of the bell tower, which houses high quality capitals illustrating the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. The capitals, carved from the leaves of water and acanthe, as well as the veins of the vaults, bear witness to a stylistic unit between these eastern parts and the crucifixes, built shortly afterwards. The nave and its lower side, although redesigned in 1774 in a sober neo-classical style, retain their large arches and Gothic vaults of origin, offering a striking architectural contrast between the sober exterior and the richly structured interior.

In the 13th century, the belfry floor of the bell tower, now extinct, dominated the building before being rebuilt in 1894 in a neo-Gothic style by architect Yolland, giving the church its emblematic silhouette. The western facade and the walls of the lower side, rebuilt in 1774, adopt a stripped neoclassical style, partially masking the medieval heritage. Despite these transformations, the interior reveals a gothic nave with capitals carved with stylized leaves, while the choir, vaulted with dogives, presents capitals of remarkable quality, adorned with d'acanthe leaves and volutes, characteristic of the Roman-Gothic transition. These elements, combined with the absence of flamboyant decor despite the supposed repairs after the Hundred Years' War (1435), underline the stylistic consistency of the building.

Ranked a historic monument in 1980, the church is now affiliated with the parish of Averns and Marines, hosting only two annual Masses. Its furniture, including 16th-century baptismal fonts, a 14th-century Virgin with Child and a 17th-century Baroque tabernacle, enriches its heritage. The bell tower, rebuilt in 1894 with an imagined belfry floor and gimmicked bays in the middle of the hangar, as well as the stair turret of the southern crusillon, at the foothills in glacis, illustrate the late interventions. Together, surrounded by the old cemetery converted into a green space, dominates the centre of the village, offering a major architectural and historical testimony of the French Vexin.
