Church of Saint-Etienne de Viauresque (Box E 435): Order of 23 April 1979
Origin and history
The church Saint-Étienne de Saint-Étienne-de-Viauresque is a religious building located in the commune of Ségur, in the department of Aveyron in the Occitanie region. Built mainly in the 12th and 16th centuries, it features a unique nave of Romanesque origin, a flat bedside and a Gothic choir. The lateral chapels retain significant Romanesque remains, while the transept, later added, reflects a Gothic influence of the 16th century. This architectural mix reflects stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs throughout the centuries.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 23 April 1979, the church belongs to the municipality of Ségur. Its simple plan, marked by a unique nave and a flat bedside, is characteristic of small medieval rural churches. Gothic elements, such as transept, suggest further enlargements or modifications to respond to changes in religious practices or the increase in the local population. The building is listed in the Mérimée and Clochers bases of France, highlighting its heritage importance.
The location of the church, specified as satisfactory (level 7/10), places the monument in the heart of the village of Ségur, in a typical rural environment of Aveyron. The Insee code of the municipality (12266) and its attachment to the district of Rodez confirm its anchoring in the Rouergue, an area marked by a rich medieval religious heritage. The absence of any mention of private owners or related functions (such as guest rooms) indicates that the building remains dedicated to cultural or community use, in accordance with its original vocation.
