Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Valpuiseaux, located in the Essonne department in Île-de-France, is a Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Martin. Built in the middle of the 12th century, it may have been a priory. Its architecture combines elements from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, with a tower and a roof added later. The building suffered damage during the Hundred Years' War, requiring a restoration in the 15th century, including the vaulting of the nave and the partial reconstruction of the right collateral, now disappeared.

Ranked a historical monument by decree of 28 September 1926, the church received grants from the Savage of French Art in the 1980s (50 000 francs in 1980 and 1984). An extensive 13-year restoration campaign was conducted in the 2000s, allowing its reopening to the public in 2016 and 2019. The building, owned by the commune, is distinguished by its flat bedside, its vaults on cross of warheads, and its prominent bell tower, witness to its architectural evolution.

The church, the only probable vestige of a medieval priory, illustrates the religious and architectural history of the region. Its inclusion in historic monuments and preservation efforts underscore its heritage importance. Available sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum, and Mérimée, confirm its central role in local heritage, with a precise location at 16 Rue de la Mairie, 91720 Valpuiseaux.
