Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Bollène, located in the Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, is a religious building whose construction began in the middle of the seventeenth century, but whose main period of realization dates back to the second quarter of the eighteenth century. It was listed as historical monuments on 6 October 1976. The works were interrupted in 1790, probably because of the upheavals of the French Revolution, and then resumed much later, between 1928 and 1929, thanks to the financial commitment of the parishioners and the action of Canon Billard, of Faucher, and Mayor Valère de Gaillard de Lavaldène. It was finally consecrated under the authority of Archbishop Naudo of Avignon during the pontificate of Pius IX.

The building of the church has experienced vicissitudes, with a long period of abandonment followed by partial reopening. In the early 2020s, major works were undertaken by the municipality due to significant structural risks, leading to its closure for about 17 years. This work, completed in 2023, allowed its re-opening in December 2023 by Mayor Anthony Zilio. The building, a communal property, remains a symbol of local religious and architectural heritage, distinct from the collegiate Saint-Martin located in the same city.

The parish church of Saint Martin, referenced under cadastre N 427, illustrates the challenges of preserving historical monuments in France. Its location, at 26 Rue de la Paix in Bollène, and its registration in the general inventory (base Mérimée) underline its heritage importance. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected building, while highlighting the ongoing efforts to safeguard it, from early 20th century donations to recent municipal interventions.
