Origin and history

The Saint-Prix church, located in Bertignat in Puy-de-Dôme, is a religious building built between the late 15th and 16th centuries. It embodies the Gothic auvergnat style, with an oriented plan consisting of a western massif surmounted by a bell tower, a two-span nave flanked by low-sides, and a five-sided polygonal apse choir. The set is vaulted with warheads, and the doubles are paired, while the fillings adopt a flamboyant style. The church houses remarkable elements such as a niche of the baptismal fonts of the late 15th century, adorned with spiral columnettes and sculptures (the shield, human mask, pinacle), as well as a 16th century granite road cross decorated with Gothic motifs (INRI, Virgin with the Child).

Before the Revolution, Bertignat's parish was dependent on the archpried of Livradois, a powerful ecclesiastical constituency of abbeys (like La Chaise-Dieu), monasteries, priories, and hospitals. This organization reflected the religious and social importance of the region, where parish churches served as spiritual and community centres. The building, restored in 1835, was partially classified in 1964 (niche des fonts baptismaux et croix) and registered in 1987 for the rest of its structure. Today it remains owned by the commune of Bertignat.

The architecture of the Saint-Prix church bears witness to local specificities, such as the use of volcanic stone and the influences of late Gothic. The baptismal bottoms, protected by a low arch and wooden doors (according to the traces of leaves), highlight the central sacramental role of the building. The outer cross, worn by the weather, suggests a popular devout practice, while the carved decorations (foliages, florets) recall the skilled craftsmanship of the time. These elements, combined with the warhead vault and the twin doubles, make this church a representative example of the rural religious heritage of Auvergne.
