Origin and history
The church Saint-Aubin de Crevant is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Crevant, in the department of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, it is distinguished by its medieval architecture, including a unique nave, a flat bedside choir and a three-sided porch. This porch precedes a columned portal and is decorated with a 16th-century bas-relief depicting Saint John, the Virgin with the Child and an unidentified saint, under Gothic dais.
The vaults of the nave, rebuilt in the 14th century, bear witness to the architectural evolutions of the era. The bell tower, located above the porch, consists of two arching floors, the second pierced with four groves. The church also houses two seigneurial chapels: one in the north, enlarged in the 17th century by four spans of low side, and the other in the south, built in the late 15th century. The choir's capitals, decorated with foliage, add a decorative touch typical of medieval art.
Enlisted for historical monuments on 12 June 1926, the church depends on the archdiocese of Bourges and the parish of Aigurande. Its history reflects the architectural and religious transformations of the region, from its granite construction to its subsequent additions. Today, it remains a testimony of the religious and artistic heritage of the Boischaut Sud, open to the visit in the communal setting.
The Boischaut Sud region, where Crevant is located, was historically marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Churches, like Saint Aubin, played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, assembly and symbol of seigneurial power. Their architecture often evolved according to liturgical needs and successive stylistic influences, as evidenced by the Gothic and reborn additions of this church.
