Origin and history
The church of Saint-Clément, located in the heart of the village of Saint-Euphrône in Côte-d'Or, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the ninth century. In 1220, the estate depended on the priory of Notre-Dame de Semur-en-Auxois. The present building, facing south-west/north-east, features a 13th century choir with two vaulted spans on cross-sections of quadripartite warheads, with capitals decorated with foliage. The southeast door, with trilobed tympanum, dates from the same period. The nave, for its part, preserves traces of murals from the beginning of the sixteenth century, including a holy bishop in prayer and a character holding a hawk.
In the 18th century, work changed the cover of the nave, now equipped with a walled frame, and added a staircase turret to access the bell tower. It was rebuilt in the 19th century, during which a small sacristy and a stand were also built. The church is surrounded by a cemetery, with which it forms an undivided property between four communes: Saint-Euphrône, Pont-et-Massène, Villars-Villenotte and Juilly. Since September 25, 2001, it has had several listed or registered objects.
The Association des Amis de Saint-Clément carries out research, animation and restoration to preserve this heritage. The church thus illustrates a rich architectural and religious history, marked by medieval influences and subsequent transformations. Its status as property shared between several municipalities makes it a special case in the Burgundy heritage.
