Origin and history

The church of Saint-Didier de Montliot-et-Courcelles, in Côte d'Or, finds its origins in the 13th century, although its present structure mainly results from subsequent transformations. The building, initially modest, was profoundly redesigned in the 16th and 17th centuries, reflecting the architectural and religious evolutions of the period. The right chapel, typical of the Renaissance, dates from the 16th century, while the choir and the left chapel, of classical style, were added at the end of the 17th century. These changes illustrate the transition from late Gothic to emerging Baroque influences.

In the 18th century, the nave and span under a bell tower were rebuilt, modernizing the interior space with dogive vaults and a unique nave in the shape of a Latin cross. The porch and staircase of the bell tower, added in the 19th century, complete the building, showing continuous occupation and functional adaptations. The square bell tower, accessible by an external staircase, dominates the village and serves as a visual landmark in the rural Burgundy landscape.

The church houses remarkable furniture, including 16th-century funeral slabs classified as Historic Monument in 1931, and a medallion of stained glass depicting the weapons of Michel Boudet, bishop of Langres (1511–1529) and peer of France. This stained glass window, classified in 1964, highlights the links between the building and the local episcopal power. Outside, the cemetery maintains a table of the dead using a prehistoric cupstone, mixing pagan and Christian heritage.

Architecturally, the church combines limestone bellows, flat tile roofs and dardoes, and a blind choir with a flat background, characteristic of the rural churches of the area. The 19th-century terracotta bas-relief, representing the Supper and from the Saintery of Vendeuvre, attests to the local artisanal vitality. These elements make Saint-Didier a witness to the historical and artistic strata of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
